Mercedarian Martyr

Serapion was an extraordinary holy and virtuous religious, a model in practicing abstinence, fervent in prayer and with a burning charity for the freedom of captives. The veneration attributed to him as a martyr was confirmed in 1728 by the Holy See. In some places, the Mercedarian Order has the ancient tradition of blessing oil in honor of Saint Serapion. He is considered to be a protector of the ill, particularly those with ailments of the throat. The Order celebrates his feast each year on November 12th.
